European Trauma Course Austria (ETCA)

Austrian group of experts in trauma patient management joined ETC initiative from the early beginning. The first Austrian ETC was held in Vienna in 2008, with an international faculty. In the following years the Austrian group has grown rapidly with now fully established programmes. Until now we have successfully completed 28 courses, which candidates from all over Europe have attended. Instructors are representing all the specialties involved in the care of the seriously injured patients.

The Austrian ETC is internationally accredited trauma course that trains doctors and non-medical health care professionals side by side in multi-specialty teams. Trauma patient management in the shock room is no longer a fixed sequence of interventions following the classical 'A,B,C,D,E' approach strictly, but a variable set of processes running simultaneously and adapted to the patient's condition. These processes need to be well organised and trained to manage trauma effectively.

Austrian group is the first one that provides in house courses. In house courses core element is a strong focus on team training and a novel modular design that is adaptable to the hospitals in differing regional European requirements. Benefits of an in house courses are:

  • training and learning with people you work with on a daily basis
  • training and learning in your own working environment

In 2014 Austrian group has established a new Society called European Trauma Course Austria (ETCA). ETCA is an international and multi-specialty group of experts in the field of trauma care and medical education. Until now, ETCA has successfully piloted and implemented several projects into ETC programme. The main focus of ETCA is overseeing the operational management of the ETC programme in Austria.
From the start of the ETC programme in Austria onwards, we have established a quality control system collecting quantitative and qualitative candidate feedback from all of our courses. This allows us to improve the ETC continuously and to adapt contents and format of the course to the candidate's needs and suggestions.
